The Billboard top 10 for May 23rd continues to surprise and disappoint simultaneously (with nary a Demon Hunter nor a Swiftie in sight). For her last column, our expert lets us know where to listen closely and where to cover our ears. Let’s see what she thinks!

1) “Choosin Texas” (Ella Langley) – This song is a slow country guitar song. I still don’t really like country music but this song does have a different sound that isn’t the same old country sound. Despite the song being slower, it still has catchy lyrics and a nice old country vibe.

2) “Be Her” (Ella Langley) – This song is another song with a country vibe which isn’t my favorite but this is a good song. The lyrics are good and catchy, with good background sound. Although the song sounds mostly country, there is a hint of pop music with the clapping and some of the instrumentals.

3) “Man I Need” (Olivia Dean) – I have now heard this song almost everywhere and I still really like it. Like I’ve said before, she has a bit of a Amy Winehouse vibe and voice and that is something I really like about this song.

4) “I Just Might” (Bruno Mars) – I really like this Bruno Mars song, it is catchy and gives off a very 70s disco vibe which I love. I love hearing this song when I am out or when it comes up on my Spotify playlist. I will definitely continue to listen to it.

5) “So Easy (To Fall in Love)” (Olivia Dean) – I honestly really like this song. It is a relaxing and soulful song to listen to anytime. I really like the subtle horn sounds in the background with the guitar and the piano makes it sound a bit like a Lofi song. It is also just a really good song.

6) “Ordinary” (Alex Warren) – This song I also love; it reminds me a little bit of “Golden Hour” because of how he describes the woman in the song. The strings at the start, for me, provide emotion and a feeling of being weightless when the drums start. His voice is also amazing, with a mix of emotional highs and lows.

7) “Drop Dead” (Olivia Rodrigo) – I really don’t listen to Olivia Rodrigo, so this song is completely new for me. It is kind of slow with a very tech-ish sound. It starts to speed up a little bit towards the middle of the song but the song for me isn’t really that catchy. For me the song is kind of boring and repetitive.

8) “Risk It All” (Bruno Mars) – I like Bruno Mars, and I like this song especially the acoustics of the guitar and the trumpets at the beginning. This song reminds me a bit of his song “Grenade” considering he would do anything for this person. I also really like the general acoustics of the guitar, horns, percussion, and lyrics.

9) “Folded” (Kehlani) – I have never heard of this song before or even the artist but the song has a nice authentic R&B sound to it. I really like the subtle base drop a few seconds in to really start the song.

10) “Dracula” (Tame Impala & JENNIE) – I have never heard of this song either, or even these artists, but the song is quite catchy and has a cool rhythmic techno sound. To me it has a bit of an 80’s sound and vibe, very instrumental and rhymey. I think I will be adding this song to my playlist.
