On March 18th, the Southeast Museum, in partnership with the Brewster Chamber of Commerce, hosted the opening of the Jean Leon Gerome Ferris American History Collection, launching the Rev 250 Celebration. Jean Leon Gerome Ferris was a noted American historical painter and collector. He was the son of Stephen James Ferris (1835–1915), a portrait artist, and inherited his father’s passion for art and collecting. Ferris was named after one of his father’s most admired artists, Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904). The Career Skills Class was proud to be part of this special event, taking on the role of catering while also showcasing their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Students sold hand-sewn Betsy Ross pillows and handmade patriotic ornaments.
In the BHS kitchen, students prepared a festive menu of red, white, and blue treats, including freshly baked cupcakes, trail mix, strawberry-blueberry pound cake skewers, and a pepperoni and cheese platter. It was truly a wonderful event that highlighted both local history and the incredible talents of the students and our program!
The Career Skills has also been busy practicing their conversation skills and meeting faculty members at BHS. We have visited Ms. Hernandez, Mr. Franze, Mr. Schmidt, Mrs. Katz, Mrs. Tarby, Mrs. Hoover, Mrs. Villaverde, and Mrs. Formisano so far! We are having a great time discussing our summer plans, our weekends, and our pets. Please let Mrs. Pearl know if you would like a visit to chat with us during 5th period. They look forward to talking with you!!
Finally, students from Career Skills, Mrs. DeRose’s class, and the Kindness Club, along with several adults from the HS and Wells, went to “Filling in the Blanks” in Norwalk to pack weekend meal bags for students in need on April 21st. With regular, balanced nutrition, kids’ behavior and academic performance can excel. With each meal delivered, “Filling in the Blanks” invests in a stronger future for communities. Each week, BHS Career Skills students provide approximately 100 meals to students in the district on a smaller scale. “Filling in the Blanks” provides approximately 10,000 meals a week to schools in Connecticut and New York. The students who attended today’s packing event worked for 2 hours creating and sealing bags that will be distributed this weekend. The students completed 1310 bags, which equals 5,240 meals and equates to 9,170 lbs of food.
