Happy spring BHS! It’s time to play ball. In honor of the seasons changing and the weather getting warmer, softball is in full swing (get it?). April officially marks the halfway point of the regular season for college softball. These are my predictions for this year’s upcoming Women’s College World Series which takes place May 28th-June 4th, along with a recap of how the top 5 teams have done so far throughout the season.
1 – Arkansas Razorbacks 34-6
The Arkansas Razorbacks softball team has been quietly consistent over the last few years. Currently sitting in third place with a home record of 22-2 and an away record of 6-3 and a neutral record of 6-1. The biggest story for Arkansas this year has been Australian Golden Ticket Recipient outfielder Dakota Kennedy. Coming in this past year as a transfer from Arizona. She has been seen as one of the best outfielders in the country. Their pitching is just as consistent as last year considering they brought back the same rotation besides a few relievers. One of their most stable pitchers has been Robyn Herron, a senior left handed pitcher. A certified “K-machin,” she ranks first in program history for opponent batting average and has multiple 10+ strikeout games this season. Two standout sophomores for the team are Right-handed pitcher Payton Burnham who had a record of 16-2 and Ella McDowell, the team’s third baseman who became the first freshman in school history to earn All-American honors. Head Coach Courtney Deifel is credited with one of the greatest “program makeovers” in history. She turned the Razorbacks from dwellers into a national powerhouse. For her most recent milestone: she just hit her 400th career win this February. She has led the Razorbacks to eight consecutive NCAA Tournaments—the longest streak in school history.
2 – Alabama Crimson Tide 38-3
The University of Alabama has a mixture of veteran players and young new talent, helping to create an energetic atmosphere for its fans. The team is currently 21-2 at home and 9-1 away. With an overall record of 9-3 when playing other SEC schools. When it comes to the offense, other teams have to watch out for the lineup that includes Senior Alexis Pupillio who’s batting an average of over .450 on the season, and sophomore Brooke Wells who has over 15 home runs on the season and consistently makes good contact in at-bats. Then, there’s the pitching staff, a mix of both Veteran and newer arms in their bullpen. The staff is led by junior ace Jocelyn Briski, the rotation’s most experienced arm, alongside freshman phenom Vic Moten—the former Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year who has already proven she can handle high-stakes SEC starts. Sophomore Braya Hodges and senior Alea Johnson provide deep relief, giving the Tide one of the most versatile bullpens in the country. The team has been Coached for the last 27 years by Alabama sports hall of fame inductee Patrick Murphy. Alabama has something to prove, after placing 14th last year.
3 – Texas Longhorns 32-6
Next up we have the most recent College World Series champs, the Texas Longhorns. The Longhorns have a 17-2 average when playing at home and a 9-2 average when playing away. Texas has a team of mostly veteran talent. This team has a full season under their belt with each other. Texas also has a great hitting duo on their side tearing up the lineup. Senior and Recent Golden Ticket recipient Catcher Reese Attwood and Junior First basemen Katie Stewart. Both have a combined .430 Batting average and Attwood is currently sitting at 15 home runs while Stewart has 20. In the circle, the Longhorns rely on a “power heavy” rotation. Senior Citlaly Gutierrez provides the veteran leadership, while junior Teagan Kavan and sophomore Cambria Salmon bring high-velocity heat that stumps even the best SEC offenses. The team is led by head coach Mike White, now in his 8th season at Texas. After leading the Longhorns to their first-ever National Championship in 2025, White has cemented this program as the new gold standard in college softball.
4 – Nebraska Huskers 32-6
Now, the Nebraska Huskers. The Huskers are having one of their best seasons in recent memory. They are currently in a battle for the Big Ten regular-season title, sitting near the top of the conference standings. Nebraska is seen as one of the more elite teams on this list, while not in the top three, they’ve been sure to beat Texas and Texas Tech (Both WCWSteams from last year) in a series to start their season. Due to the success, they held the No. 1 Strength of Schedule in the country for much of March. The team is currently 9-1 on the road, 11-4 neutral- and 12 -1 home on the season. Huskers’ elite players include the dual-threat superstar Jordy Frahm (formerly Bahl), who has returned to her championship form in the circle while providing a massive spark at the plate. Alongside her, freshman teammate Alexis Jensen has emerged as a reliable second ace, allowing the Huskers to compete with the deepest lineups in the country. Head coach Rhonda Revelle recently secured her 1,200th career win at Nebraska, and the team seems to be playing with extra “juice” following that achievement.
5 – Florida Gators 39-5
The Florida Gators are in the running as a team trying to make a statement in the standings this year. Following a weekend sweep of South Carolina (April 10–12), they have firmly re-established themselves as one of the elite national title contenders. They are currently 21-2 at home (one of the highest records when playing at home) 10-2 on the road, and 8-1 neutrally. This team is young, They have an explosive offense and a young pitching sensation who pitches like a senior. Arguably their best player so far this year has been Junior starting pitcher Keagan Rothrock, she currently has a record of 21-4 with a 2.43 era. She just reached her 3rd career no-hitter against South Carolina. She is easily one of the main aces in the SEC currently. Florida’s lineup is hitting .371 as a team thus far. Two noticeable players in this lineup are Taylor Shumaker, the breakout Center folder hitting over .460. She is the “spark plug” at the top of the lineup, leading the team in runs scored and on-base percentage (~.558). Then there’s Kenleigh Cahalan, the Senior Shortstop. She is having a career year, reaching base in nearly every game and providing elite defense. Thanks to her and Mia Williams, the team has over 18 double plays. Jocelyn Erickson is the team’s star catcher. She is the reigning SEC Player of the Year and is arguably the best “clutch” hitter on the team alongside Shumaker. The Gators are led by head coach Tim Walton, now in his 21st season. Walton has built a reputation for defensive perfection and disciplined hitting, and his ability to mold this young roster into a top-5 contender has many experts picking Florida as the favorite to represent the SEC in the championship series.
Honorable Mentions: The Tennessee Vols and the Oklahoma Sooners are currently sitting in #6 and #7. Both are elite programs known for winning, but never really making it all the way to the end. I believe both will make it to the playoffs. Who will make it further?
Predictions: Going off of what we know so far from the regular season, I’m going to be giving my predictions of who I believe the top four teams will be in the Playoffs. I believe it will end up being the Arkansas Razorbacks, Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas Longhorns, and the Oklahoma Sooners (possibly even the Florida Gators). Something about all the teams on this list is that every single one has something unique about them. Texas has the Power and explosive offense. Alabama has an extremely strong rotation. Arkansas has the power from the transfers. And finally Arkansas has high standards.
Overall: Three out of the four teams on this list are already a part of the top five teams in college softball currently. All have either been in the top four or won overall in the Women’s College World Series over the past 5 years and all have something to prove. Who will be the final two? Guess we’ll have to wait and find out!
