Now that Halloween has passed, let’s go over the most unique costumes seen on social media in the month of October. I want to introduce you to someone on TikTok that will most certainly help you channel the inner creativity in you. This creator started a challenge for the month of October where she dresses up as something new every single day until the day of Halloween. Her name is Sophie, and she goes by the name of SophSilva on TikTok. Sophie’s entire page and personality is known for creating her own different and unique cosplays and costumes. Now that you know a little bit about her, here are two of the most unique and cutest costumes she’s done so far for the month of October that I think will help you jumpstart your costume for next year’s Halloween. Then I’m going to show you one Halloween costume that was found using Pinterest.
The Peacock
Let’s start off with exploring the animal route, a peacock!Think about how many authentic bird costumes you’ve come across in your life. My guess is not many. We’re going to start off with the bottoms for the costume. I would recommend getting a ton of peacock feathers and attaching the right amount to your preferred choice of bottoms, specifically a black color, using whatever method that works for you, be it using glue or just some sewing. Sophie uses a skirt she found off of Etsy as a quick and easy way to start, so if you prefer that, then I would highly suggest doing what you think is best for you. Once you find your preferences, use more of those feathers to get started on your choice of top, making sure it follows the color scheme of a peacock. Sophie uses a teal sweetheart corset and lines the middle down with feathers to make it look like it’s conjoining with her skirt, but you can freestyle this however you want. If you are using a top with a sweetheart collar you could use those feathers and line the collar of the corset with them instead of following what Sophie did so it matches your personality more than someone else’s. Now let’s move on to the biggest piece of this costume, the tail. If it’s not obvious yet, you will need more feathers, like a lot since the tail is a pretty large aspect of this costume. You can make a cape that attaches at your hip like a wedding dress, or you could do wings that attach to your lower back to get as accurately close to having the tail look similar to a real peacock. Now you may have some leftover feathers that you may not know what to do with, that’s okay! I came up with a way to complete the costume, accessories! You could turn the feathers into a pair of earrings, a hair piece, and a face mask. Or you could customize your own shoes to really complete the look using a lot of vibrant blues and greens.
Fancy Nancy
Now let’s go through a different route: nostalgia! Again, this costume is from SophieSilva. Sophie goes back in time to our childhood books and gets inspired by the one and only Fancy Nancy. Sophie started her video off by pointing out Nancy’s iconic hair. Nancy is seen on the cover of her books with a big mess of curls sticking straight up and tons of hair accessories all over, so Sophie starts to assemble this costume by doing her own little spin on Fancy Nancy’s hair, so go ahead and grab all of your very colorful hair accessories and a curling iron and start to make your hair look like a wig used in Bridgerton. You want the accessories to clash, yet come together at the same time in a nice cutesy way that you see on Fancy Nancy herself. And don’t forget that you can also put your own twist to any of the costumes, especially for Fancy Nancy because she is known for advocating her own sense of style, so style your hair in an updo that you feel the most confident showcasing to the world. This goes for the costume too! Go as crazy as you can with your outfit; use ruffles on everything, like, your sleeves, your collar, your skirts, and even in your hair. Aim for very bold and vibrant colors. Wear the most fluffy scarves, feathered scarves, and furry scarves you can find out in the clothing industry. Put on the most decorated, the most fashionable, and the most luxurious mind boggling hat that you can get your hands on for yourself. Look for the fanciest looking tops and skirts too, even tutus are an amazing choice for this costume. Last but not least, choose the prettiest, most elegant looking shoes to complete the outfit altogether. And now you have successfully dressed up as Fancy Nancy for next year’s Halloween!
Chicken Little
We have talked about some nice feminine costumes, now let’s remix it a little bit. Think about a costume that can fit anybody and everybody. If you thought Chicken Little… you would be absolutely correct! Good job. This costume was found on Pinterest, so, I’m going to start with the top of the costume. Now if we’re being honest, no one has white hair with red in it looking like a chicken, so grab the best looking white wig that you love and would showcase the personality of Chicken Little. Next grab a headband and find big red feathers and glue, sew, or find a way to attach them on. After you’ve done that, put it on to pair with your wig. Congrats! You just made the comb of Chicken Little. Now let’s move on. We’re going to focus on the face for a little bit. Grab green glasses. Now put them on. Now find a chicken beak. Put it on. Yay! Now you have the face of Chicken Little. Now that we have the small details out of the way, we can move on to the body! This costume is really quite simple and you don’t need much for the clothing part of this, so to make it more challenging, find a striped green shirt or a top that you like that fits closest in color to the movie and add some white gloves to get the color of Chicken Little, then find a brown pair of shorts or pants and pair it with a pair of orange socks or sneakers to match the feet of Chicken. If you are wearing a brown skirt or a nice pair of shorts then you can pair that with some nice orange leggings underneath and to finish the costume we are going to pair it with some nice white or orange sneakers.
Let’s change the perspective. Have you ever looked back at pictures from Halloween and regretted your choices of costume and wished you could’ve picked something more unique with your best friend? You opened up to the right page then.
Tinkerbell and Vidia
Do you ever just want to reminisce about the good days when you were young, carefree, and overall just having a good time? Let’s travel back to a nostalgic duo for everyone; Tinkerbell and Vidia. I might be a little biased because I used to be a huge Tinkerbell fan, but that’s beyond the point. It’s honestly the ideal duo costume. It brings in the trope “Golden Retriever and Black Cat” all in one. Let’s take a deep dive in what you need for this costume; A simple, green short dress, green ballet flats (or if you’re really feeling it, a low inch heel) with a little pom- pom attached. Now Vidia is a bit more tricky because she has a lot more layering than Tinkerbell. What I would recommend is some magenta and/ or plum leggings, matching socks, boots if you can find something similar, and a tank top or even a shirt with very slim, sheer short sleeves. Her little skirt is tricky because it is very pointy and does have some long feathers. What would probably work best in this scenario if you could attempt to diy the skirt if you’re really that hardcore about Halloween. You would need a good base with a similar purple and some large, lighter feathers. And last but not least, the wings. Obviously if you’re going to be a fairy, you need your wings. Your best bet for the wings and majority of the stuff I listed above could be found on Amazon. If you wanted to attempt the wings, I’d use some translucent fabric for the inside, some pipe cleaners for the intricate details, and lots of fabric glue or even hot glue.
Hamilton
For whatever reason, every year Hamilton tends to resurface back into the internet. That’ll be where I start for my next costume. It’s not an easy costume, but it is easy to recognize and by far the most unique ones by far. Both Alexander and Aaron both have this button up vest situation. They’re not that hard to find honestly. Any retail store carries them nowadays from trends from the Y2K era coming back. Under the vest, I’d suggest a button up with puffy sleeves because that was the style back in the day. On the neck, they have a thing called a “jabot.” A jabot is basically the white, ruffled piece that hangs in the front that looks like a handkerchief. On top sits an overcoat. If you’ve ever seen the musical, you can tell the distinct difference between Burr and Hamilton. Burr’s coat and overall costume has a lot more of the buttons. If you can’t find a coat similar, I think the colors and everything else within the costume matter the most to be recognizable. They both wear the color corresponding to their coats for pants. For boots, they have a simple pair of black, leather boots which you can find at any department store.
Barbie
From the early 1959s, Mattel’s produced their prized possession, their star girl; Barbie. Barbie has been around for decades now and still hasn’t failed to steal the hearts of young girls and even the older generations. There are obviously different models and generations of Barbie’s, but my personal favorite for this costume would be the version from 2012, Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse. Coming out of that show, an underground doll released in 2007 made her debut as a main character in the 2012 production. Back to the costume, let’s start with Barbie first. Barbie is known for her signature blonde, flawless hair. In the show, her hair is in a half-up half-down style. Her front pieces are slicked black in a side part. The tips of her hair are flipped out, which you can get the look from either hair rollers or a straightener/ flat iron.
Her dress consists of 2 parts; the sparky hot pink top and the ruffled, layered skirt. I’d use a generic hot pink tank top (which you can find at Walmart for like less than $5). And if you’re really committed, I’d say glue some sequins or bedazzle the top with pink gems. Her skirt is a bit more challenging due to the fact colors and the style of her skirt isn’t common to find in stores. If you can find a little purple skirt, consider yourself lucky. If you buy the skirt and it lacks the volume like Barbie’s perfect, fluffy skirt, I’d recommend buying a crinoline, or known as a petticoat. A crinoline is a stiffened petticoat designed to hold out a woman’s skirt and give it more volume. For accessories, Barbie has dangly, pink diamond earrings and a gold pearl-style necklace with matching gems. She also has a matching bracelet with both gems and gold pearls. For heels, she has a lighter shade of pink compared to the one on the top of her shirt. Now, for Raquelle’s most recognizable outfit. In contrast to Barbie, Raquelle has more of a dark, mysterious color palette. Firstly, she has a cream colored undershirt. Honestly, I don’t know if she’s wearing a short sleeved shirt or tank top. Either way, as long as you have that solid color base you should be fine. Over the shirt, she has a cropped, gold leather jacket. The leather jacket is truly unique. The zippers are quite large and really add character to her jacket. Like Barbie, they both have a ruffly skirt, but the difference is that Raquelle’s is black. If you really struggle looking for a skirt like hers, you could probably suffice with a regular pencil skirt. Over the belt, she has a really layered, studded, gold belt. Under the skirt, she has some capri leggings in black to match the color scheme she has going on. At the edges of her pants, it has a line of red. You could probably do without the red-lined part. For accessories, she has a pale yellow, layered pearl necklace and regular red stiletto heels.
