On August 23rd, 2025, a global hit was released. K-Pop Demon Hunters amazed people around the world. After being rated #1 movie on Netflix for 2 consecutive weeks, and the most popular movie in Netflix history, it is clear how cool this movie really is. Either you love it or you don’t. I’d like to go over the reasons as to why this movie sparked the interests of several people around the world or why it didn’t.
The music of K-Pop Demon Hunters is almost the best thing about this movie. The seven most popular songs are, “How It’s Done,” “Soda Pop,” “Golden,” “Takedown,” “Your Idol,” “Free,” and “What It Sounds Like.” The hit song “Strategy” was released by TWICE, a famous K-Pop girl group, and also featured in the movie.
These seven songs soared in popular song charts, with “Golden” remaining #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks straight. The writers and producers that created these songs consist of EJAE, Mark Sonnenblick, and Danny Chung, among others from THEBLACKLABEL for “How It’s Done,” EJAE, Mark Sonnenblick, IDO, 24, and TEDDY for “Golden,” EJAE, IDO, and Mark Sonnenblick for “Your Idol,” Jenna Andrews and Stephen Kirk for “Free” and “What It Sounds Like,” and “Takedown” written by Lindgren.
There are many reasons as to why the music of K-Pop Demon Hunters is so liked. For starters, the songs were produced with top-tier creators such as Teddy Park of THEBLACKLABEL who helped create hits with groups like BLACKPINK, also a famous K-Pop girl group. Another reason is that the lyrics and music were tailored to the characters of HUNTRIX and Saja Boys. The words and melodies match the unique personalities and vocal abilities of each member, creating a deep connection between the listener and the characters. Yet another reason is that the songs have something called Musical Storytelling, which means the songs are designed to reveal character emotions, advance the plot, and tell most of the story through song. This helps the listener enjoy the music even when it’s not coming from a TV.
Characters
The characters of KPDH are the literal image of the movie. Often, movies strive to give their characters as much personality as possible. That helps viewers connect with the characters more. The three main heroines of KPDH are Rumi, the leader and main singer of HUNTRIX (also secretly part-demon), Mira, the choreographer and cold and emotionless role model, and Zoey, a bundle of energy and spunk, known for writing most of the lyrics to their songs and rapping them.
All three girls are known for their signature colors. Rumi, with her long purple braid, is known for purple. Mira, with her pink hair, likes pink, and while it has been debated, Zoey is a teal girly. Throughout the movie, these girls change costumes quite a bit, and sadly, they don’t often match their natural color palette. Usually their outfits match each others’ outfits and not their favorite color.
For weapons, each of them has a unique design and style. Rumi uses a Saingeom (Four Tigers Evil Slayer) sword, Mira wields a Gok-Do (curved moon sword/polearm), and Zoe fights with Shin-Kal (spirit knives/mudang tools).
Accuracy of the Real World
Another topic that has been greatly talked about in the movie, is the amount of accurate representation of the K-Pop world. While it’s great to see such a supportive manager like Bobby, it’s often not the case for real life K-Pop groups. Real life managers are often strict and mean, overworking their idols and making as much money as possible off their songs.
Another accuracy issue is the amount of things the group would get hated on for doing in the real world. For example, throughout the movie HUNTRIX could be accused of creating drama with a rival group (Saja Boys), being seen as overworking their members, experiencing fandom drama over dating rumors, or facing scrutiny for canceling shows at short notice. Uneven Line Distribution would also be a problem, for even if Rumi is the lead member, receiving more spotlight than the other members is frowned upon and seen as favoritism. Not to forget, HUNTRIX did kinda murder the entire Saja Boys group in front of thousands of fans.
Overall, the accurate representation of the movie is not that accurate. Then again, movie makers want to make a funny kids movie that has a good ending, and that’s better than the real world any day.
In conclusion, the music gets a 8.5/10, the characters get a 9/10, and the accuracy of the real world gets a 4.7/10. K-Pop Demon Hunters has garnered a mix of positive reception, praised for its unique blend of flashy K-Pop aesthetics with fast-paced demon-hunting action. Fans appreciate the bold concept and striking visual style, while critics have noted areas where storytelling could be more refined. Despite its niche premise, the project has carved out a loyal fan base and stands as a testament to the power of genre fusion in modern media. Overall, its rating reflects both its innovative spirit and the challenges of balancing style with reality.
