As of May, every major and European league has concluded, the winner of each league has been decided, and it’s known what will happen to the extra spot in the Club World Cup, but who will win the UEFA champions league? Who will win the CONCACAF Champions cup? All this and more will be talked about in the third and final edition of “Full-time Highlights” of this year.
Starting off with the major and European leagues winner, I’ll start by rank of each league. Starting strong with the Premier League, Liverpool won after having a strong champion throughout almost the whole season finishing the season with 83. Next with LaLiga, FC Barcelona won after having a great season, under their new manager Hansi Filch winning with 88 points. The Italian Serie A is next, in which Napoli won after a very tight title race with Inter Milan, eventually winning by one point with 82 points. The next league is the Bundesliga where FC Bayern Munich won the league after missing out last year and winning Harry Kane’s first professional league trophy, and Bayern ended up winning by 82 points. Lastly Ligue 1 with PSG who won the Ligue 1 unsurprisingly after taking the league four years in a row, winning it with 84 points. Overall, each league was highly entertaining, with each team having their own fight and their own story to tell.
Now briefly moving on to the Club World Cup which will officially start Jun 14, 2025 with Inter Miami vs Al Ahly. Although almost everything is set in place, the only thing not quite decided is what will happen to Monterrey due to the club being removed from the Club World Cup for going against the multi-club ownership. Although Monterrey tried to fight this, the club still got removed which is why it was decided that a one game playoff between club America and LAFC will decide who will fill in that missing spot on Saturday May 31, 2025. The winner of this game will go to the Club World Cup and receive $9.55 million as a reward, overall an important game for both clubs financially.
Moving onto the biggest final in club competitions is the 2025 UEFA Champions League Final taking place on May 31, 2025, at Allianz Arena as Paris Saint-Germain takes on Inter Milan. PSG attempts to win the club’s first Champions League title. They finished league position one this season with a domestic treble. They’ve defeated giants such as Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal during prior matches leading up to this game, which show their ability to show up in big games. On the other hand, the Italian club, Inter Milan, are looking to win their fourth Champions League, having won it 15 years ago in 2010. Inter have beaten Bayern Munich and the heavy favorites FC Barcelona after two incredible games, and overall both teams are looking strong. Yet, it’s PSG who are currently on greater form. Players who are in great form right now are PSG’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has been a great source in PSG’s offense. He started in all 14 Champions League matches and lead the knockout round PSG offense with four goals and six assists in the later stages of the tournament. For Inter Milan, it’s Lautaro Martínez, Inter’s top goalscorer with seven goals and five assists. Overall, both players have had a great season and it could get even better by winning the champions league.
Another final, on the other side of the earth, is in the Americas as this year’s CONCACAF Champions Cup Final will take place on June 1, 2025, at Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico, as both Cruz Azul and the Vancouver Whitecaps will compete for the champions cup. This game without a doubt will be very tense and hard fought, especially with the final being played in Mexico, as Cruz Azul will have a home advantage (which is even better paired up with the fact that Cruz Azul have been consistent throughout the tournament, not facing any hard times that caused early eliminations or failures to make it this far). Therefore, they were expected to make it far in the tournament. The Vancouver Whitecaps are a bit unexpected and new to a Champions cup final. Either way, both teams have a lot at stake as the winner takes all glory in the region and a chance to compete in the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup and 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.
Overall, this season has been great and incredibly entertaining. From each league to the champions league, from the concachampions league to the new Club World Cup, a lot has gone on this season with a lot more continuing onward. Everyone is looking forward to the Gold Cup, and to next year’s champions league, as well as the highly anticipated World Cup which will be here in the US next summer. Thank you for reading this first year’s editions of Full-Time Highlights.
