Highs & Lows of Awards Season: Justice & Misdemeanors

Judging the fashion dos and don’ts is not only a privilege, but a law-abiding trendy right

If you’re like me and avidly judge the red carpets of every award show, then I know you were disappointed by so many looks this year. The Grammys and the Oscars—none of them were promising this year, but some were an exception to this. In this article, we will be unpacking a few of the best and worst looks from this year’s award show season. No, I will not be talking about Doja Cat at the Grammys, and no, I won’t be going easy on my critiques.

Starting with the worst:

1) Laverne Cox in Comme des Garcon

The Grammys

So incredibly over the top in the wrong ways. It looks clownish and out of place for the Grammys.

2) Fantasia Barrino in Cong Tri

The Grammys

Just so unflattering and a miss, in my opinion, for Fantasia. I like the accessorization, but the dress itself isn’t doing it. She always does great things; this just isn’t one of them.

3) Danielle Brooks in Dolce & Gabbana

The Oscars

Maybe I’m biased for my hate towards D&G, but this was just so basic and tacky. This is something high schoolers wear to prom, not at the Academy Awards.

Next, the best looks from this season:

1) Ariana Grande in custom Giambattista Valli

The Oscars

Another example of when method dressing for red carpets goes right. A stunning abundance of pink fabric used in a beautiful way.

2) Jon Batiste in custom Atelier Versace

The Grammys

Maybe I’m biased as a Versace fan, but this was so cool to me. Whenever a man wears something other than a plain suit to a red carpet it’s already superior to me. Although it’s plain gray, it has such a dystopian and futuristic vibe to it.

3) Victoria Monet in custom Atelier Versace

The Grammys

Versace really doesn’t miss. This dress fit to a tee, and the fabric choice was absolutely perfect for the silhouette. The simple jewelry pairing was a great choice, and she really just looked amazing.

With an honorable mention to Boygenius and their coordinating suits…

…this award show season has come to a close. Here’s to hoping for better red carpets in the future, especially with the Met Gala approaching in May.
