All recaps are as reported by team captains. Bear Facts makes every effort to contact any and all captains; any omission is therefore not the responsibility of the news staff.
Captains: Samantha Kivel, Edit Morales, and Melena Salazar
Coach: Victoria Francis
Seasonal Record: Brewster Varsity Cheer placed 3rd place out of 8 teams at their competition at Yorktown. BVC was very close to being runner up this season.
Seasonal Highlights: Freshmen Ariana Torke and sophomore Toni Ann Munoz were All-Section nominees. Junior Alicia Eder and senior Melena Salazar got their back handsprings/round off backhand springs in such a short amount of time, which is a great accomplishment on their part. The team worked very hard together in practice and while performing to try and do their best.
Looking Forward: Next season, the girls are expected to work super hard and get that first place trophy. As we have such hard working girls and new skills, there is definitely high potential in learning new skills, new tumbling, and new stunts. BVC hopes to continue being a family and having fun but also being productive and wanting to do well at competitions. As every year, the seniors will be missed, but BVC will grow more and more for years to come.
Girls Varsity Volleyball
Captains: Kaeley Fox and Macie Marinich
Coach: Maribeth Powers
Seasonal Record: 0-7 (went to quarter finals)
Seasonal Highlights: Being only down by 3 points to John Jay in the quarter finals (a team that they previously struggled to compete at the same level). Grace Galgano ran into a chair during her first point in a game. Danielle Rosner earned All-League. Macie Marinich earned All-League Honorable Mention.
Looking Forward: The Brewster Volleyball Program plans to build the program at all age levels and work to develop a “feeder-program” to better prepare the athletes for high school level athletics. We recently began a Booster Club for the high school teams and are working alongside many camps to introduce the sport to younger age-groups. We hope to improve our record and make Brewster Volleyball a known name throughout the section.
Captains: Alexis Mark and Brooke Ryan
Coach: Patty Kaufman
Seasonal Highlights: Although we weren’t allowed to physically compete in the same place as another team, our team was always high energy. Supporting each other whenever someone swims and screaming cheers before meets kept things normal and will always be some of my favorite moments with the team. Personal stand outs included improvement in the 100 Fly where some learned to love the challenge.
Looking Forward: We hope that next year the team gets more girls to join. Being a member of the swim team has not only brought the captains joy but it’s also taught them so much. The team taught them the balance between teamwork and individual success as well as the importance of always trying your best. Although swimming is a team sport, there is a lot of individual responsibility. You are not only racing the other team, but you are also racing your teammates as well as yourself. Because of this, we were able to push each other to our limits, ensuring that we always compete to the best of our ability. These aspects of swimming helped to shape the captains who they are and can only hope that more people will be lucky enough to experience it.
