Spring Sports Recaps – The Temps and Teams are Heating Up!

All recaps are as reported by team captains. Bear Facts makes every effort to contact any and all captains; any omission is therefore not the responsibility of the news staff.

Varsity Baseball
Captains: Shane McLaughlin and Matt Salvo
Coaches: Gerard Gallela and Michael Trainor
Seasonal Record: 9-10

Shane McLaughlin was a top hitter this year with a batting average of .343. Justin Parodi started as a freshman and was a top 3 player all around. George Handal and John Gerfen started off ruff but ended up pitching lights out towards the end of the season, John with a 3.00 ERA and George with a 3.69 ERA. John Gerfen came in late in the game and pitched two shutout innings against John Jay Cross River and ended up hitting a walk off BOMB to take the W. (This was the first time Brewster beat John Jay in over a decade). The teams overall defense was lock down with little to no errors a game this year. Our outfield with Matt Salvo in center, Richard Tofte in right, and Collin Brennan in left were making plays left and right.

With this young team this year, there is so much potential for future years. Brewster will be a big threat in the Section and continue to be better with all these young stars coming up.

JV Baseball
Captain: No captains
Coach: Jason Weltman
Seasonal Record: 8-7

JV baseball finished above .500 even with a rocky start. Behind the bats of Lucas Cabiati (led team in batting average) and Jason Mariella (led in RBIs) and the pitching of Tim Carlin (led team in ERA), the team finished 8-7. After starting off 3-6 the team went on a hot streak winning going 5-1 in their last 6 games with notable wins against John Jay, Somers, and Carmel.

Looking forward, JV baseball looks to try and replicate the success of the team this year and develop player to go on a sectionals run.

Girls Flag Football
Captain: Bre Washington
Coaches: Matthew Cunningham and Michael Patricia Castaldo
Seasonal Record: 8-0 League Champs

The girls have worked really hard and have shown great improvements throughout the season. The offense was led by QB Bre Washington who is a threat to score at any given time. The highlight of Bre’s season was the 79 yard TD run against Scarsdale. The team is fortunate to have had several offensive weapons in Gianna Gioielli, Grace Galgano, Jordan Niles and Ava Fagin. All have contributed with great plays throughout the season to help the team be successful. The team’s defense has been outstanding all season led by Fiona Dodd and Kiley Brooks playing at the linebacker position.

The players on this year’s team have done a tremendous job in building a strong foundation moving forward. They will have a strong core of returning players coming back next season and are looking to add more athletes!

Golf
Captains: Shane Daly and Owen Lennon
Coaches: Christopher Gaudio and Michael Nicastro
Seasonal Record: 9-7
The player who was the most valuable this year was Billy Carlin who had an overall great year. The most improved players this year was a toss up between Kevin Fox and Matthew Thompson shooting consistently in the high 40’s after last year where they didn’t see much match time. The rookie of the year this year was Nicholas DiFabbo who despite it being his first year golfing, broke 50 in one of our last matches of the year.

With so much young blood on the team, we are looking forward to a good year next year. We move forward with high hopes that we will be able to have a shot at a league title.

Girls Varsity Lacrosse
Captains: Margo Cunningham and Ashley Sheil
Coaches: Kristen Ohberg and Marina Souza
Seasonal Record: 7-9

Looking back, one of the highlights of the season was when they beat Carmel away in overtime. The team came back in the game to force overtime, which showed a lot of grit that they carried with them throughout the season. After losing to them for the first time last season, it was important to get that win this year. Another highlight was the Morgan’s Message game, raising awareness for student athletes mental health.

Next year, the athletes hope to keep improving and gaining more confidence. They will miss their four seniors greatly (Ashley Sheil, Juliene Gabriel, Emily Monaco, and Sasha Kulo), but the team’s future is bright. Margo Cunningham will also make her return next season after a long ACL recovery!

Next is Lola LaLuna who was a star at shortstop and made great plays. Lastly, Avery Dudones who was always ready to be put on any position at any time. For next year, they hope to continue working hard, improving their skills and putting in effort on and off the field.

Boys Tennis
Captains: Sean Carlin, Matthew Tuohy, and Sam Whitney
Coach: Rob McCollum

The team’s highlights were seeing all the guys grow in skill. A lot of the guys on the team joined with no prior experience and were barely able to hit the ball over the net. Now, the same guys are able to hit the ball over the net with consistency and decent strength. The team expects to be a lot more competitive next season.

Girls Track and Field

Coaches: Mike Courte, Erik Jacobsen, Daniel Rossi, and Joseph Scelia

The Brewster girls placed second out of five teams in their leagues and had a very strong season consistently of 4×4 relays usually including Anna Peterson, Charly Handal, Hailey Kutz, and Gizelle Luna. Charly Handal was a top runner, placing third in counties for the 100 meter hurdles and fifth place for the 400 meter hurdles. Samantha Miller and Alexandrea Agustin have been excelling in pole vault with the chance of making it to state qualifiers.

The girls are looking to keep working hard even when the season comes to a close in order to come back even better next year and to keep pushing their limits to the fullest. They know that true hard work, perseverance, dedication, and determination is the only way to get there.
