Fighting and Sports Competition Dominate the Landscape

I am going to be honest with you all: there haven’t really been big announcements during this time. In the months of April and May, we don’t hear anything from big companies like Microsoft, Sony, or even Nintendo. The only real news we heard is companies buying other companies and companies merging. Microsoft has bought Activision and EA is looking to merge, just to name a few. We are currently in that awkward period of time where we aren’t seeing huge amounts of games being released. But with that being said, there was one major game that the community was looking forward to: Nintendo Switch Sports.

Nintendo Switch Sports was released on April 29th, 2022. This game is a continuation of the Wii Sports Series from the Wii. The game includes 3 original games from the Wii: “Bowling,” “Tennis,” and “Chambara” and 3 new games: “Badminton,” “Soccer,” and “Volleyball.” In order to play these games, you have to start moving. Similar to the control of Wii Sports, you have to get up and move your joy-con. For example, in “Tennis,” you have to swing your joy-con in the same movement like in real life tennis. The game is supposed to feel very similar to playing sports in real life. And the community was very excited for this game because we haven’t seen a new game similar to Wii Sports from the Wii era, which is a console from 2006. But after two weeks of the game being released, the hype has died out and everyone has stopped talking about this title. The game was released way too late into the console’s life. And the Nintendo Switch wasn’t appealing to everyone. The Wii was very successful with Wii Sports because the Wii was appealing, not only to gamers, but to everyone in the family. Wii Sports wasn’t seen as a game but rather an activity all family members can take part in. But that wasn’t the case with Nintendo Switch Sports, It failed to live up to the success of Wii Sports.

But gamers would receive a pleasant surprise in the middle of May: MultiVersus and its Closed Alpha Release. For those who are unfamiliar: MultiVersus is a free-to-play fighting game developed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Player First Games. And since it is developed by Warner Bros, this game has access to the characters within the Warner Bros. catalog. For its first release, you would see characters like Finn The Human, Steven Universe, Superman, and Shaggy all fighting each other. And that is only to name a few of the current lineup of characters for this game. MultiVersus is a 2v2 fighting game, meaning it is played in a team rather than playing alone. You would partner up with someone else and play against two others. The game is strongly built on this 2v2 concept. With this Closed Alpha Release, some gamers were allowed access to play this game, so people were able to see the current state of it. And most gamers who played this game say it is really fun, but it does need some work on areas of the game. But for an Alpha Release, this is very impressive. It seems like Warner Bros. has really appealed to many people and they are listening to the feedback from them. Warner Bros. cares about this project and can easily bring success. With so many recognizable characters in their catalog, they can really appeal to anyone. And who knows? They can easily add more characters to the based roster as well as have other characters join the fight later. MultiVersus is currently on its way for a Open Beta Release in July 2022. And it is also free-to-play, which is just the icing on the cake. Currently, Warner Bros. has a really appealing and impressive project and they are taking the right steps for success.

June is the hotspot for gaming announcements, ending that awkward period of time from May. Game companies are prepared for huge announcements and ready to show them off in game events. Sony is having their PlayStation State of Play on June 2nd, which will consist of third-party reveals and PS VR2 games. Summer Game Fest, which is taking place June 9th, will showcase a wide variety of games from consoles to PC and big announcements. Microsoft is having their Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase on June 12th, which will consist of titles from Xbox and their first-party division as well as other game partners. We haven’t heard anything from Nintendo, but they typically release any information 2 days before their event. Those are the 4 major events happening all in June. And I can’t wait to see what they will bring to the table.
